"And you seek exactly what, Captain?"
Goldstein had coached him. Frazier knew the appropriate response. Even with that, he was having difficulty forcing out his answer. "I seekrevenge."
The woman's exquisite face displayed an intensified radiance. "Excellent, Captain Frazier, excellent! The correct channel to true happiness is the ability to articulate our needs and, of course, to have them fulfilled." She paused long enough to inhale, then extinguish her cigarette. During the process, she was momentarily veiled by a misty cloud of blue gray, sweet-smelling smoke. "The more practical aspects of my service dictate that such needs be fully defined. Let us deal with who and when, Captain Frazier."
The officer fished hurriedly through his pockets until he located the hastily scribbled document containing the four names. "Here are the names of those who have wronged me."
The woman took the piece of paper and refolded it without looking at it. "And what is the nature of their offenses, Captain? Would you care to share that with me?"
Charles Everett Frazier shook his head. "I didn't know I was supposed to," he stammered.
